Job Introduction

BBC Arabic provides news, current affairs and programmes on Radio, TV and Online to Arabic speaking audiences in the Middle East and across the world, 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The output is modern in style and outlook and adheres to BBC values of accuracy and impartiality. It has broad appeal, free from commercial, political and religious affiliations or pressures. BBC Arabic reaches a weekly audience of approximately 44 million across platforms and provides one quarter of output across the entire World Service.

We are searching for a Journalist who will provide specialist and general coverage of events across the range of BBC outlets from BBC Arabic in Arabic and English to international and UK outlets.

This role will be based in the BBC Washington Bureau, working with the current Arabic Newsgathering team based in DC and covering stories primarily from across the USA as well as the Americas when needed.

Role Responsibility

As a Journalist, you will be expected to originate and select stories related to US and regional affairs, and produce engaging news and current affairs content for broadcast across TV, Digital, Social and Radio platforms. You will offer ideas for innovative digital-first contents anddevelop these ideas into storyboards and production plans. Also, you will suggest innovative angles and formats in order to maximize the appeal of stories, especially among youth audiences, female audiences, and Arab diaspora audiences. Having knowledge of / willingness to learn new skills including shooting and editing videoand audio, you will be able to adapt to different working methods.

We expect you to have a high standard of editorial judgment and writing ability based on substantial TV broadcast journalism experience. As well as having substantial and proven experience in video and digital journalism.

You will have a full command and up-to-date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Arabic and a complete understanding and command of written and spoken English to an acceptable broadcast standard.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have the following experiences:

  • Excellent understanding of BBC Arabic output and audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and punctual delivery to project deadlines.
  • Ability to research and plan deployments including preparing risk assessments, sharing editorial guidance, fixing logistics and overall budgeting.
  • Readiness to deploy at a short notice, for assignments around the USA and the Americas when necessary.
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of working in hostile environments and coverage of riots, shootings, environmental disasters, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively and calmly in an environment where news is constantly changing and being updated and having the temperament to enjoy the process.
  • Ability to adapt to changing audience habits and new formats and a willingness to undergo regular training on new technologies.
  • Ability to produce two-ways and make digital, radio and television packages and use social media actively to promote BBC coverage.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an understanding of the importance of working as a part of a team, especially at a distance, as well as working independently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good cooperation with other BBC teams in DC, in London and in the field, and to forge collaborative, flexible and communicative work relationships.
  • Must have the right to work in the USA.
